While Scarlet Witch is being set up as the movie's villain, the new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness promo, “Reckoning,” revealed her heroics, not villainy. Wanda has been a hot topic of debate since her hit series WandaVision aired on Disney+ last year, with many undoubtedly convinced she will be the villain of Doctor Strange 2. The character has teetered on the line between hero and villain ever since her debut in Avengers: Age of Ultron. She’s a deeply flawed and complex character with a cloudy moral compass but always seems to do what's right in the end. What makes her character so compelling is she is continuously battling between two conflicting values — following her heart and doing what’s right.
Scarlet Witch has faced these conflicting values in every project she's been in. However, the choices that stand out the most are her acts in Avengers: Infinity War and WandaVision's tragic ending. During Infinity War, she had to choose between what her heart wanted (to be with Vision) and what was right (helping the Avengers stop Thanos). For most of the film, she followed her heart and only wanted to protect Vision, but she did the right thing in the end and made the ultimate sacrifice, at great personal cost. During WandaVision, she clashed with these values again, forced to choose between following her heart (staying in Westview with her family) or doing what was right (freeing the people of Westview). Once again, she did what was right and tore down the hex even though it meant losing the only people she loved. Doctor Strange 2 will be her biggest test yet, and what will make her turn all the more tragic if she ultimately decides to follow her heart over the right thing to do. However, new Doctor Strange 2
