Warning! Spoilers ahead for Sonic the Hedgehog #49
The good alter ego of Dr. Robotnik known as Mr. Tinker briefly has returned to the Sonic the Hedgehog series, delivering a much-needed, and incredibly tragic boost to its newest character.
In what's now known to be uncharacteristic of the series, IDW Publishing's Sonic comic began with an intriguing mystery, the full extent of which fans have yet to truly grasp. After years of suffering from what is revealed to be a severe case of amnesia, the infamous Robotnik/Eggman believes himself to be a kind man named 'Mr. Tinker,' who loves animals, and only builds things that will help or bring joy to others. During this time, Mr. Tinker apparently created a mechanized wooden marionette more advanced than anything Dr. Eggman ever built named Belle the Tinkerer, who later joins Sonic and his friends' battle against her own creator.

At first, Belle coming to terms with her origins made her a welcome addition to the comic book series' cast of less impressive characters. Unfortunately, her most compelling characteristics soon dwindled as the IDW series shifted to focus on her attempts to fit into her new home. That is, until Sonic the Hedgehog #49 by writer and artist Evan Stanely, colorists Matt Herms and Heather Breckel, and letterer Shawn Lee. After temporarily falling under the control of Dr. Eggman, Belle stumbles upon a note wedged inside one of the evil scientists' Badniks, which she soon learns is a letter of farewell written to her by Mr. Tinker himself (before he regained his memories and became Dr. Eggman once more). The letter is quite poignant, with Mr. Tinker expressing fear and dismay
