In response to the recent invasion of Ukraine, The Walt Disney Company has announced that it will halt upcoming film releases in Russia. Sharing the news through social media Monday evening, the global entertainment company also confirmed plans to aid in the ensuing refugee crisis. Warner Brothers and Sony have followed suit with delays of their upcoming films to Russian theaters.
Disney shared a brief statement on Twitter concerning its response to the crisis in Ukraine. “Given the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the tragic humanitarian crisis, we are pausing the release of theatrical films in Russia, including the upcoming Turning Red from Pixar”. The company then proceeded to acknowledge that it did not know when such a halt would be lifted claiming that “future business decisions [will be] based on the evolving situation”. Finally, the House of Mouse addressed the “emerging refugee crisis” with plans to work with its “NGO partners to provide urgent aid and other humanitarian assistance to refugees”.

The first big film from Disney that will miss its Russian debut is Pixar’s Turning Red. However, if the pause remains in effect, the country may miss out on highly-anticipated films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Lightyear.
Disney is not alone in its decision to pause theatrical releases in Russia. Per The Hollywood Reporter, WarnerMedia made the decision to pull The Batman from its upcoming release there.
