Bungie has offered Destiny players space to store their extra goods since the first game, and the Destiny 2 vault is about to increase in size. This vault space improvement will allow Destiny 2 players to store weapons, armor pieces, materials, items, and more in the additional slots provided with an upcoming update.
The current Destiny 2 Vault is only capable of holding 500 items, but according to Bungie, this has been increased by 100 to include 600 total slots for players to store items in. Because each player has seen a Vault size increase of 100, and with over 38 million players, Bungie has created millions of new empty Vault spaces in the update. This Vault improvement will go into effect with Update 4.1.0, the first update brought to Destiny 2 since The Witch Queen expansion was released earlier this year.

Because these schedules are subject to change depending on each update, it may require more time, which will push the update download further back for players, but Destiny 2 should be back up for players by the afternoon of May 24.
