Legendary Shards are one of Destiny 2's main forms of currency. Obtained from dismantling Legendary and Exotic-rarity gear, Legendary Shards are needed to do virtually anything. By far the fastest way of earning Legendary Shards for veteran players is to clean out your Vault. Most players stockpile weapons and armor as they play Destiny 2 in hopes of using them in the future. This rarely happens, causing some players to have Vaults that are almost full.
Every weapon and armor piece you dismantle is worth three Legendary Shards, four if you have the paid Season Pass and are a high enough level. Dismantling 300 weapons and armor pieces from your Vault would yield 900 Legendary Shards—1,200 if you own the current season.
