Destiny fans might have noticed a certain lack of communication from Bungie in recent months. It started before Season of the Haunted, where Bungie was uncharacteristically silent about all the new content that arrived back in May, and it's continuing today where we still have very little info on Season 18 to go on.
In previous years, Bungie would have happily stoked player excitement by announcing sweeping changes to the Destiny 2 sandbox and maybe previewing a few juicy Exotics. Developers would even freely engage with players in the Destiny 2 subreddit dropping even more hints about what’s to come.

That’s all gone now. A thread in the Destiny 2 subreddit expresses the thoughts of many Guardians. "I miss seeing so many ‘Bungie Replied’ threads here," wrote one Reddit user (and noted by Forbes). Breaking radio silence, Bungie senior community manager Dylan "dmg04" Gafner offered an explanation.
"Here's the thing," wrote Gafner, "the harassment we've spoken to isn't just rude replies on twitter or vague comments. There have been real threats towards our people and our studio. We're taking them seriously, which is leading to an amount of reduced communications as the team plans future protections / strategies to help avoid these sorts of things."
Gafner noted that some harassment was directed at him and his family, which led him to take some time off. Other Bungie devs have also scaled back their online presence, including lead designer Kevin Yanes who deleted most of his tweets on Twitter. Bungie has even taken legal action against at least one Destiny 2 player who threatened Bungie HQ and Gafner personally.
