Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the next project set in the Cyberpunk universe, premiers this September on Netflix. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is an anime series based on the same universe as the game. And even though Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch was less than successful, those still invested in its lore should take note of the show.
As reported in May, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners had the spotlight at Netflix’s Geeked Week 2022 event today. Here, we finally saw some footage of the anime via a teaser, as well as a glimpse behind the scenes. CD Projekt Red is working with Studio Trigger, which is handling the production of the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime. Some of the studio’s other works include 2013’s Kill la Kill and some episodes of 2021’s Star Wars: Visions.
Cyberpunk 2077 showed that Night City had plenty of stories to tell outside its core quest lines. And now with Cyberpunk: Edgerunner, we’re getting an entirely different story with new characters. If the teaser trailer is anything to go by, you can expect to see plenty of the dark themes that were present in the game. The story focuses on a “street kid trying to survive in a technology- and body-modification-obsessed city of the future.”
The anime will run for 10 episodes, and follows the journey of David, one of the show’s protagonists, surviving in Night City as an Edgerunner. He is joined by Lucy, another character who gets plenty of screen time in the trailer. Beyond that, it’s a bit tricky to pull any specific plot details from the teaser.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is shaping up to be just as frenetic as the game was at times. Its animation style looks to be making full use of the universe’s violent and vibrant world. Hiroyuki Imaishi is directing the anime, with Yoh Yoshinari acting
