The just announced Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will become the first Xbox Series X game to release with three discs, CD Projekt Red has confirmed.
Speaking to IGN, a spokesperson clarified exactly how the Ultimate Edition — which packages the base Cyberpunk 2077 with its Phantom Liberty expansion — will be released on each system.
"The Xbox Series X box contains three discs with the base game and expansion," the CD Projekt Red spokesperson confirmed, which makes it the only physical version of Phantom Liberty available across any platform.
"The PlayStation 5 box includes a game disc with Cyberpunk 2077 and a code for the expansion to be redeemed in the PlayStation Store," they added. "The PC version comes with a GOG code for both the base game and the expansion. The reason for the difference in how the Phantom Liberty is included in the Ultimate Edition is due to technical requirements specific to each platform."
While fellow hit role-playing game Baldur's Gate 3 was set to become the first triple disc Xbox Series X game when it arrives in the first quarter of 2024, Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will beat it across the line by launching December 5, 2023. PS5 exclusive Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is also set to launch on two discs when it comes out in February.
John Linneman of tech analysis website Digital Foundry posted on X/Twitter to say why he believes the PS5 version of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition won't come with Phantom Liberty on disc. Putting it there, instead of just adding a download code, would require CD Projekt Red to resubmit their game to Sony, which would require extra time and money. The same happened with Final Fantasy 7 Remake: Integrade, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, and more.
