When CD Projekt Red unveiled Cyberpunk 2077, there was a ton of hype around it. Fans who enjoyed this studio’s line of The Witcher games were eager to see a game release from a different IP. We traded in our medieval setting for something far more futuristic. Likewise, the game was marketed to have some big branching storylines, with the creation of your character presenting you with your first major choice. Lifepaths were introduced as a means of not only giving your character a backstory but also playing in different scenarios throughout the game.
If you don’t recall, the lifepaths in Cyberpunk 2077 were Corpo, Street Kid, and Nomad. Each, as mentioned, already had its opening and backstory for the game. So whether you wanted a life where you grew up on the mean streets of Night City or lived a life of luxury from the Corpo scene, you got to dictate your beginnings before starting the campaign. These lifepaths also gave you some unique dialogue options that came up occasionally in the campaign. However, it wasn’t long into the game campaign that your origin stories all transformed into one point.
That’s where developers are hoping to change with the upcoming sequel. Thanks to IGN, we’re discovering that CD Projekt Red narrative director Philipp Weber spoke on their AnsweRED Podcast. During the conversation, lifepaths were brought up, and Weber noted that this is an area that he would like to see improved. Weber noted that lifepaths could give you more different playstyles to your characters in the next game. According to the developer, that is one area that CD Projekt Red didn’t really sell.
