Upon its launch in December 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 was one of the most high-profile fiascos of all time in the games industry, launching after years of extreme anticipation and hype to widespread criticisms. From the rough technical state it launched in (especially on consoles) to the core weaknesses of its game design to how it failed to live up to many of CD Projekt RED’s lofty promises, the open world action RPG was lambasted from all corner, in spite of impressive sales, to the extent that it was even pulled from the PlayStation Store, only returning several months later.
Of course, CD Projekt RED has spent the last two and a half years working on improving and fixing the game, and after multiple patches and updates, Cyberpunk 2077 is continuing to enjoy a proper resurgence.
In fact, as pointed out by CD Projekt RED’s global community director Marcin Momot on Twitter, Cyberpunk 2077 current holds a “Very Positive” rating on its Steam page. Out of all of its user reviews to date (numbering over 546,000 at the time of writing), 80% are positive and recommend the game.
CD Projekt RED isn’t quite done yet with Cyberpunk 2077 either. Its first and only expansion, Phantom Liberty, is due out for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on September 26. Its launch will also be accompanied by a free update for the base game that will overhaul its police system, enemy AI, and progression mechanics.
Following Phantom Liberty, a full-fledged sequel, Project Orion, will begin development at CD Projekt RED’s North American studio, where Phantom Liberty director Gabe Amatangelo will once again take the reins of the project.
