CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a massive new expansion in September with Phantom Liberty, which sees V and Johnny Silverhand venturing to Dogtown. A new gameplay trailer is available, and senior communication manager Paweł Burza sat down with narrative director Igor Sarzyński for a deep dive. Check it out below.
Dogtown’s ruler is Kurt Hansen, who’s also responsible for its naming. He’s described as part tyrant, part protector but a businessman, first and foremost (with South American drug lords cited as an inspiration). To assist him is Barghest, his military unit/gang, consisting of Militech soldiers from his former squad. After the last Corporate War, they opted not to return and remained in the area.
Over time, marauders, gangsters and more have also joined their ranks. They’re not the most “sorted out” military unit and do their own thing but respect Kurt’s authority.
Dogtown is an area of contrasts, with anarchy and authority present in equal measure. The district was meant to be a paradise district, but development was interrupted by the war. Areas controlled by Barghest are safe, but other places are too dangerous, and no one ventures to them. Trauma Team doesn’t venture to Dogtown at all.
Since there are no corpos, there are also no corpo taxes. As such, the Black Market is where you’ll find everything, from “weird tech you wouldn’t find in Kabuki, custom cyberware” to stolen corpo equipment. There’s also a tank, but you can’t buy it and go on a joyride to Arasaka Tower to blow it up.
