Benedict Cumberbatch found playing multiple variants of his character in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to be a fun challenge. The English actor is still fresh off showcasing his acting chops in The Power of the Dog as the brutish cowhand Phil Burbank, which earned him his second Oscar nod following 2014's The Imitation Game. Shortly after Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home as the culprit who started the movie's multiversal mess with a botched spell, Multiverse of Madness tasks the sorcerer with his own dimension-hopping adventure.
Cumberbatch leads the cast of the Doctor Strange film alongside Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, who was last seen studying the Darkhold in WandaVison and has long been assumed to be playing a villainous role in Multiverse of Madness. Xochitl Gomez makes her MCU debut as America Chavez, a teenager who possesses the ability to travel between dimensions. Building on multiverse concepts introduced in Loki, What If...?, and No Way Home, the Doctor Strange sequel will feature variants of known characters, including multiple versions of the titular hero.

The actor approached this a bit differently than other roles, as his performance had to convey the sense that each iteration of the character from another universe is different as a result of their own choices, circumstances, and environment.
