Channing Tatum still wants to play Gambit despite Disney and Marvel Studios canceling his X-Men spinoff movie. Prior to Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the latter studio spent years trying to get Channing Tatum to appear as the New Orleans native mutant Remy LeBeau. Tatum was originally confirmed to play Gambit in an unspecified X-Men movie in 2014. Fox's plan eventually evolved to make a Gambit solo movie starring the Jump Street and Magic Mike actor prior to him appearing in a main X-Men film.
Despite Tatum's interest in playing Gambit for the X-Men franchise, the movie struggled to make much progress. Major directors like Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman, and Gore Verbinski circled Gambit before ultimately leaving for various reasons. Fox's intent to make the movie was not deterred, though, as Gambit received a 2020 release date eventually. However, plans for Gambit were ultimately canceledonce the project fell under Disney's umbrella and Marvel Studios began crafting plans to reboot the mutants in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This left Tatum without a chance to ever play Gambit.

It's been a few years now since Disney canceled Gambit and since Tatum appeared in a movie. The latter changes soon with the release of Dog, which Tatum co-directs. During a recent conversation with Variety to promote the movie, there was a lot of talk about his plans for Gambit and a possible future appearance. Channing Tatum confirmed in the interview that he would still love to play Gambit at some point in the future if Marvel Studios gave him a chance.
