Marvel's Captain Marvel is one of the more popular heroes in the company's current A-list lineup, but she has a substantial amount of readers who strongly dislike her. Her detractors on the internet are as vocal as her fans, perhaps even more so. The reasons why Captain Marvel is so despised by a small but vocal minority of the Marvel fanbase are complicated, but they largely have to do with Carol's characterization over time, her actions during certain event comics, and Marvel's insistence on promoting the character before other female superheroes...and in that last aspect, the X-Men film franchise may be to blame.
Carol Danvers is not the first Captain Marvel, though she is the best-known iteration of the character. Initially appearing as a supporting character in the Captain Marvel series, she eventually acquired powers of her own and adopted the name Ms. Marvel (female versions of existing male characters were quite popular at the time, like She-Hulk, Spider-Woman, etc). She later took on other names such as Warbird, then Binary, then Ms. Marvel again before finally «taking the damn name» (her words) in 2012 when she officially became the next and current Captain Marvel.

Even before becoming Captain Marvel, Carol was a contentious character. She's brash, aggressive, arrogant, and unapologetic in her actions, even (especially) if she's in the wrong. She doesn't cater to the traditional image of a typical female superhero; her short hair (in more modern incarnations), muscular physique and full-body costume that isn't nearly as revealing as her contemporaries (see Black Widow, Emma Frost, Scarlet Witch, etc) all serve to set her apart from the norm.
