There’s a new Dark Souls-inspired game around every corner. With so many copycats flooding the market, it’s hard for a new title to stand out from the pack without a unique gimmick. Overborder Studio is the newest development team to attempt to break the Souls mold, with its first title, Thymesia, slated for an Aug. 18 release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. If the dev team succeeds remains up in the air, but you can prepare to play Thymesia by making sure your gaming PC has the components to properly run the game.
Thymesia takes more inspiration from Bloodborne than the rest of From Software’s Souls-based, action-RPG catalog. You play as a character named Corvus who must save the kingdom of Hermes from dark times. For generations, the people used alchemy to heal and augment their bodies, but something has gone horribly wrong. It’s up to you to remember what happened and, hopefully, end the chaos.
The game adopts Bloodborne’s fast-paced combat, but adds its own unique flair. Corvus has bird-like abilities that let him shoot feathers like daggers, and even transform into a crow. Besides those abilities, Corvus uses plague weapons. Upon delivering a final blow to an enemy, Corvus absorbs its energy and transforms it into a heavy attack or ability upgrade. Although Souls games and other RPGs have similar systems (think paper in Bloodborne or oils in The Witcher), this buff-stealing technique is unique in that it doesn’t rely on traditional resource gathering.
You can purchase Thymesia from GOG(Opens in a new window) or Steam(Opens in a new window) on Aug. 18, 2022. At the time of this writing, neither game had a pre-order option.
