Very few game developers can say they've defined, or even more so created, a genre, but FromSoftware is one of them. Its formula of highly-detailed worlds, deep lore, and a certain difficulty led to Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and most recently, Elden Ring. The latter has dominated the market over the past few months, but going all the way back to Demon's Souls, other developers took note.
The Soulslike genre was born out of this, and several games have taken this FromSoftware formula and made it their own. There are some good Soulslikes out there, as well as some bad ones, as such is the nature of game development. The latest, releasing on August 18, is Thymesia from OverBorder Games, and it has gotten a lot of attention over the past few months. Notably, it's been mostly compared toBloodborneof all the games in FromSoft's catalog.
Thymesia's Soulslike Mechanics Explained
In Thymesia, players take on the role of Corvus who must recover his memories in a punishing world and save the kingdom of Hermes. To do so, he'll have to wield Thymesia's plague weapons, take on his raven form, defeat plague enemies, and much, much more, all with the grueling difficulty that comes with a Soulslike. But because of this difficulty, many may be wondering how long it takes to beat the game. Luckily, developer OverBorder Games has revealed that it'll take 7-9 hours to beat Thymesia, with a few factors playing into this.
Whereas many Souls and Souslike games can take hours upon hours to beat, it's worth remembering that Thymesia is a very ambitious but definitively indie project.
