The reboot/revival of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was announced in 2018; at the time, there were reports the revival series would put diversity first and deal with real modern-day issues, with the studio reportedly looking for a Black lead actress. Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight, Texas) was attached to the relaunch as showrunner, and she implied the new show would be a sequel series with a new Slayer — more of a relaunch than a reboot.
There's been no news about the reboot since 2018. Disney acquired the rights to the franchise along with the bulk of Fox's film and TV empire, meaning any reboot or relaunch will be made by the House of Mouse. For now, rather than focusing on a Buffy revival, Disney seems to be relaunching the franchise in a series of novels, each of which explores a different potential future and introduces a new Slayer. The latest, by New York Times bestselling author Kendare Blake, is set decades after Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 7, and it shows just how easy it would be to do a relaunch.

The idea of legacy is baked into Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
