Justina Machado has been tapped to star in The Horror of Dolores Roach, an upcoming Amazon series from Blumhouse Television. The half-hour show is based on Gimlet’s scripted fiction podcast of the same name, with a voice cast featuring Daphne Rubin-Vega, Bobby Cannavale, and Amy Ryan. Per the synopsis, the soon-to-be series is “a contemporary Sweeney Todd-inspired tale of eat or be eaten; a macabre urban legend of love, betrayal, weed, gentrification, cannibalism, and survival of the fittest.”
Now, One Day at a Time star Justina Machado has been cast as the titular lead in The Horror of Dolores Roach, THR confirms. The series will reunite Machado and One Day at a Time showrunner, Gloria Calderón Kellett, who worked together over the course of the revival series’ four-season run. Kellet is executive producing alongside Dara Resnick, pilot director, Roxann Dawson, and the podcast’s creator, Aaron Mark, who also penned the pilot script.

Machado will play Dolores, who, after serving a 16-year prison sentence, is returning home to her unfamiliar, gentrified neighborhood of Washington Heights. To make ends meet, Dolores gives massages in the basement of her friend Luis’ empanada shop – that is, until Dolores must resort to extreme survival tactics. In addition to playing Penelope Alvarez on One Day at a Time, Machado is known for her work in Six Feet Under, Queen of the South, and Jane the Virgin. Her Horror of Dolores Roach cast members include Alejandro Hernandez, Kita Updike, and K. Todd Freeman.
