CBS has renewed Blue Bloods season 13 as a result of its consistently strong ratings. The police procedural series, which is the third longest-running CBS scripted show behind NCIS and its spinoff NCIS: Los Angeles, originally premiered on the network on September 24, 2010. It follows the multigenerational law enforcement family the Reagans, who all hold different positions and sometimes experience conflicts but always have Sunday dinner together every week. The main cast includes Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Danny Reagan, Bridget Moynahan as ADA Erin Reagan, Will Estes as Sergeant Jamie Reagan, Len Carious as Commissioner Henry Reagan, and Tom Selleck as Commissioner Frank Reagan, all of whom have appeared in every season of the series.
Blue Bloods season 12, which premiered in October 2021, is currently airing, with its finale set to premiere on May 6, 2022. The season's main cast also features Marisa Ramirez as Detective 1st Grade Maria Baez and Vanessa Ray as Officer Eddie Janko-Reagan. This season also featured the directorial debut of Moynahan, who helmed episode 17, «Hidden Motive,» which aired on April 1 and features an investigation into the supposed murder of a college student.

Per THR, CBS has renewed Blue Bloods season 13 just three weeks before their upfront presentation. CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl proudly proclaimed that the series "not only continues to dominate in the ratings but excels at an exceptionally high creative level." The series has been averaging 9.81 million viewers per episode in season 12, which is a lower average than any past season of Blue Bloods, but nevertheless landed it as the number four highest viewed non-sports series
