A lot of the early talk about Black Adam was about how he'd be redefining the balance of power in the DCEU, but even more than that, his upcoming movie could redefine the direction of the DCEU as a whole. Despite relative successes like Wonder Woman and Shazam!, the failure of the DCEU's flagship superhero team-up, Justice League, still looms large over the entire project. While The Flash is set to reboot the DCEU it's the upcoming Dwayne Johnson-led Black Adam that could provide the best look at the future of the franchise, simply by stepping away from the Justice League almost entirely.
Black Adam is a project with a long development history in DC's cinematic universe, as Johnson was originally considered for the role of DC's Captain Marvel in Shazam! Ultimately, the blockbuster actor opted to play the villainous Black Adam instead, and the studio decided to give the character his own solo movie due to Johnson's star power. That left the question of who, if anyone, would fill out the more classical superhero role in the film. With Zachary Levi's Shazam in the middle of his own sequel, the only logical choice remaining was the Justice Society of America—effectively DC's first real Justice League—hailing from the Golden Age of comics and featuring some of DC's older classics, including Doctor Fate and Hawkman.

It's the presence of the Justice Society in Black Adam that could be the ticket for the DCEU to move on from their inconsistent portrayal of the Justice League altogether.
