Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny's (Kaley Cuoco) final arc on The Big Bang Theory was spoiled all the way back in season 5. CBS' hit sitcom ran for 12 years before it wrapped up in 2019. By then, the Hofstadters had been married for a while, and to shake their relationship up, the writers introduced a conflict that the couple dealt with throughout the whole year.
Apparently, despite dating for so long — not to mention married for a few more years — the pair had different ideas as to what their future would look like. Leonard was set on having kids, but his wife wasn't sold on the idea. Following years of struggling in her career, Penny finally found a job in the pharmaceutical industry where she was thriving. Afraid that getting pregnant would derail her current life, she was hesitant about her husband's plan. Throughout The Big Bang Theory season 12, this was the couple's dilemma, and viewers were divided on the matter. On the one hand, Leonard had long expressed his want to have children. Meanwhile, to some, Penny's decision seemed to somewhat come out of nowhere. Going a few seasons back, however, it's been established that she was always kind of skeptical about being pregnant.

In 2012, The Big Bang Theory celebrated its 100th episode with «The Recombination Hypothesis.» The outing showed Leonard and Penny as they daydreamed about their future after deciding to reconcile their romance. As she decides on her outfit for her date with his then-ex-boyfriend, Penny visualizes a future where she's heavily pregnant during her wedding ceremony with Leonard.
