A trailer for Better Call Saul season 6 hints that mysteries surrounding Gus Fring’s past will finally be explained. The prequel series to Breaking Bad, which follows Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) becoming Saul Goodman, opens its final season on April 18. The series has created a number of complex secondary characters, and it is Gustavo “Gus” Fring (Giancarlo Esposito) who offers the biggest question mark. The trailer, which shows Gus walking into his home, suggests that some of his secrets might finally be revealed.
Although Gus appears in both Breaking Badand Better Call Saul, he is the personality that viewers know the least about. Gus' not so realistic death is sealed in Breaking Badseason 4, episode 13, “Face Off”, but the restaurant boss—whose Los Pollos Hermanos chain is a front for his underground methamphetamine distribution financed by German company Madrigal Electromotive—only ever gives away small details about his past. Gus hides in plain sight—brazenly using philanthropy to push an anti-drug message while doing multi-million distribution deals with the Mexican cartel. This involvement is to seek revenge on those who murdered Maximino Arciniega (James Martinez), a chemist who Gus partnered with in Mexico to create meth—realized in season 4, episode 10, “Salud” of Breaking Bad. But little is known about the previous training Gus must have had to able him to cull a group of dangerous men. Additionally, season 6 needs to explain what happened to Gus in Santiago.
