Ben Affleck is the best Batman. Why? His foreboding presence and calm demeanour make him the ultimate version of the Caped Crusader. He isn’t unkempt and out of control like Christian Bale, which lends itself to a different kind of frightening. He dominated each and every scene with chillingly controlled emotions, eliciting the same feeling as watching Kevin Conroy in the animated series or Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy. But the mental toll, the pressure from toxic fans, and Warner Bros’ meddling all seemed to cinch Affleck’s hatred for the role. Yet, he’s back, and the DCEU is better for it.
Despite that, far more people are excited about the return of Michael Keaton, the star of Batman (1989). He was one of the first actors to wear the cowl on the silver screen, and his two films in the role hold up to this day as gleaming examples of what superhero movies can be. Keaton and Burton arguably pioneered the modern cape flick, paving the way for Spider-Man, X-Men, The Dark Knight, and the MCU. There’s a distinct legacy there that’s earned, but Keaton’s Batman wasn’t the be-all and end-all, certainly not his Bruce Wayne. His performance was rock solid, but he’s been superseded even by Bale and his throaty Bat-voice.

Not to mention that with so many classic actors returning to the worlds of Marvel and DC, it was only a matter of time until Keaton’s comeback. Meanwhile, Affleck’s return is like Christopher Eccleston making a comeback as the 9th Doctor in live-action.
