Rainbow Dickerson has reportedly been cast as Kya, Sokka and Katara’s mom, in Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series. The show will follow the same adventures and characters as the original anime-influenced series, which ran for three seasons from 2005 to 2008. The show’s sequel series, The Legend of Korra, also gained a cult following and now the live-action series will continue the Avatar universe with eight one-hour episodes.
Avatar: The Last Airbender follows Aang, the Avatar who can control water, fire, earth, and air in a world where some people can bend only one element. His journey begins as he awakes from a 100 year slumber and must master all four elements to save the world from the Fire Nation's attacks. Gordon Cormier, who was in Stephen King’s 2020 miniseries The Stand, was cast as the kindhearted, energetic Aang alongside Kiawentiio (Anne with an E., Rutherford Falls) as Katara and Ian Ousley (13 Reasons Why, Physical) as Sokka. The majority of the cast has also been revealed including Dallas Liu as Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh, Elizabeth Yu as Azula, and Maria Zhang as Suki. Although, the most exciting casting may be the return of the original cabbage merchant voice actor, James Sie.
