Avatar 3 Runtime Revealed by James Cameron, Gives Production Update
Acclaimed filmmaker James Cameron has finally revealed the runtime for 20th Century Studios’ long-awaited threequel to 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water. This comes ahead of the epic sci-fi movie’s theatrical release later this year on December 19.
During a recent interview, Cameron confirmed that Avatar: Fire and Ash will have the same runtime as the 2022 sequel, which was 3 hours and 12 minutes long. In addition, the Oscar-winning director also shared a new positive update regarding the current status of the third installment’s production, revealing that the threequel’s progress has been much smoother compared to The Way of Water’s filming.
“It’s in strong shape, I think. We’ve doubled the number of shots finished at this stage of the game than we had on movie two [and] the films are about equal length,” he said (via Empire). “So that puts us well ahead of the curve, which is something I’ve never, frankly, experienced before.” The process is, he laughs, “a little bit less nightmarish. We’re getting to the point where we’re actually getting good at this.” Frankly, we’d say he was already pretty good.”
Avatar: Fire and Ash is once again directed by Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The ensemble cast includes returning stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, and Joel David Moore, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Edie Falco, and more.
Cameron previously said that the upcoming sequel will explore “different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.”
