Alchemy is at the core of the Atelier series experience. For all the cuteness, the chemistry between dynamic protagonists, the battling and gathering in fields, everything ultimately revolves around mixing items together in a cauldron to achieve fantastic (or not-so-fantastic) results. Atelier Sophie 2 doesn't break far from this excellent alchemical gameplay formula, but there are numerous welcome enhancements across the board.

Let our guide be your gateway to understanding crafting and item synthesis. We'll go over other aspects of your lovely (and titular) atelier as well so that you can soon feel quite comfortable in Sophie's magical new abode.
Just as Sophie can't craft without the right materials, players can't engage with the gameplay system without knowing the right buttons to press. Maybe this will seem overly tame to you, but it's worth the explanation just in case. Waltz up to your cauldron, and when you're ready to begin, press the 'X' button on PS4 and PS5, the 'A' button on Switch, and... well, whatever key you have assigned for item interactions on PC.
Seasoned Atelier veterans will know full well what it means when a puzzle-like system pops up, though newcomers may feel understandably overwhelmed. The game has a decent onboarding tutorial, handy for players of any skill level, but if the sheer amount of space on the board-like item-mixing UI is throwing you off, here's a tip — think of what you're seeing as a Bingo board or a sort of scratch-off ticket. Except unlike any of those things, you're in full control of how things come together.
By aligning your ingredients alongside other pertinent pieces, you'll boost the strength of your creations.
