There are six distinct types of animal companions that Eivor can have in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but some stand out and are more useful than others. A few of the animal companions are tied to side quests that need to be found and completed first. All of Eivor's companions can be seen at the Ravensthorpe settlement or in the mount menu at a stable. Aside from the mount and flying companions, Eivor has a few other animals they can recruit to their settlement in Assassin's Creed Valhalla.
Many of the animal companions are mounts or flying creatures that aid Eivor on their journey. Unfortunately, a lot of the cooler or more exotic mounts and flying companions need to be purchased via microtransactions in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. There's a chance that a mount from the store will appear in Reda's Shop, but the rewards are random, so it can take a while to get a specific animal. Additionally, anything in Reda's Shop needs to be purchased with Opals, and there's a time limit for how long an animal is available.

Although some animals need to be purchased, there are several that can join Eivor's clan through side quests found around England. Most of the animal side quests are quick and simple, it's just a matter of finding them first. There are also many animals to pet in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but they aren't necessarily Eivor's companions.
