With the rise of online gaming, local co-op options have become fewer and farther between. There is still a huge market for local co-op gaming experiences, however, and various developers have stepped up to meet those demands. One such developer is 10tons, who recently brought its Dysmantle game to consoles, and it's something that local co-op gamers should definitely check out when they get the chance.
Dysmantle is a survival game set on a large island that's been ravaged by monsters. Two players can explore the island together, sharing upgrades and stats, while able to equip gear independently of each other. The game uses a top-down view for the most part, but the camera can be adjusted to give players a better look at whatever area they're exploring. Players have to stay within the same camera shot, so it's a little restrictive, but they're given enough room to roam that it rarely becomes an issue.
Returnal Ascension Update Adding Co-Op and New Game Mode is Out Now
Dysmantle's survival game elements aren't hugely oppressive, so players don't have to worry about eating regularly or drinking water. They will have to adjust what they're wearing if they wind up in a place that's too hot or too cold, but for the most part the gameplay revolves around smashing things to get crafting items to make new weapons that can in turn smash more things.
Dysmantle definitely has some Minecraft influence, but it also takes some cues from the Dark Souls series. Dysmantle has a high-level of difficulty at first, with most monsters able to easily kill the player characters. As the game progresses, Dysmantle players will become significantly stronger and be able to turn the tables on their enemies, dispatching monsters with ease.
