Android 13 Beta Includes 'Clear Calling' Noise Cancellation Feature
The latest beta release of Android 13 has revealed a new feature that promises to offer a better call experience on most mobile networks.
As XDA Developers reports(Opens in a new window), the new feature is called "Clear Calling," and it was first discovered in the Android 13 QPR1 Beta 1 build by Mishaal Rahman(Opens in a new window), co-host of the Android Bytes and All About Android podcasts.
The feature isn't officially available in the beta, but Rahman managed to manually enable it. The settings page explains how Clear Calling reduces background noises during calls for "most mobile networks," but not Wi-Fi calls. Pixel device owners will be happy to hear the contents of calls is not sent to Google in order for this noise cancellation to work.
The new feature will be available on the Sound & vibration settings page, assuming it makes it through beta and into a final build. XDA speculates that because Google isn't collecting any data, Clear Calling will rely on a machine learning solution present on each phone.
Google Meet added intelligent noise cancellation for its iOS and Android apps back in 2020, so Google has been working on this technology for a number of years. Using it to improve the quality of phone calls seems like a logical next step.
