2019 was a simpler time. Covid was not a thing, most of us didn't know what working from home was like, and not many of us had even heard of Among Us. In came 2020, and all of that changed. While things were of course miserable for everyone, Innersloth's social deduction game boomed – probably due to the lack of social interaction from being restricted to our homes. However, if this wasn't the case, Among Us was ready for the chopping block.
It's already known that the devs were looking to break ground on Among Us 2, but the sudden rise in popularity of the game resulted in them building on the original. But what many hadn't considered is that since Innersloth didn't have that big a team back then, working on Among Us 2 meant ending support for the original.

"We were basically done with (Among Us) at the start of 2019," said Innersloth co-founder Marcus Bromander on the Visionaries podcast, spotted by PCGamesN. He mentioned that after launching the third map for the game, along with a few updates, the team thought “that’s it, no more, time to work on something else.” In fact, the devs even started “prototyping some other game ideas that got pretty far.”
But as we know, Innersloth eventually decided to “ride the wave” of popularity and continue working upon the original. Ideas of a sequel were still being floated, but it was ultimately decided that there was no need for one – as of yet, at least. “Should we do Among Us 2 or should we update the game that everyone is already playing?” said Bromander. “There’s so many people playing, I wanted to experience releasing updates like that to a lot of people.”
