An American hacker reportedly took down the internet in North Korea single-handedly in a revenge attack after falling victim to alleged North Korean hackers the year before. North Korean hackers have long been blamed for many attacks on American and Western interests, with the notorious Lazarus Group said to be behind many of them. The Lazarus Group has previously been accused of the cyberattack on Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2014, and for spreading the WannaCry ransomware in 2018.
The North Korean internet is a heavily censored service with most global websites unavailable to the common person. According to reports, most people with access to the global internet in the country are either government officials or researchers, and even then, their internet access is heavily monitored by Pyongyang. As for the regular population, most of them can't access the internet at all. For the ones who can, they only get a truncated intranet system with a handful of domestic websites and services.

Internet connectivity in North Korea has been patchy over the past few weeks, ever since the country's most recent missile tests, leading many to believe that State-sponsored hackers may be behind the attacks. However, according to Wired, it was a single individual, an American hacker, who was behind the major disruption. The hacker, known only by their 'P4x' online handle, was reportedly the victim of a previous hacking campaign by North Korea a little over a year ago, when State-backed cybercriminals targeted Western cybersecurity researchers in an apparent attempt to steal their intellectual property and find gaps in their cybersecurity armor.
