One of the most pressing questions about Cobra Kai season 5’s story relates to the show’s potential plans for Mike Barnes. He’s arguably the most important character from The Karate Kid franchise still missing from the Netflix sequel series. Both he and The Next Karate Kid’s Julie Pierce have yet to make an appearance.
Rumors are swirling that season 5 will be the story that finally brings Mike Barnes back to the Valley. Played by Sean Kanan, Barnes was Daniel’s primary opponent in The Karate Kid Part III, though not necessarily the main antagonist of the movie. That role instead went to Terry Silver, who conspired to bring Daniel down by using Barnes, a professional fighter. He hired Barnes to antagonize Daniel and later had him fight on behalf of the Cobra Kai dojo in the All-Valley Karate Tournament. Despite being a vicious fighter and arguably one of the most dangerous enemies Daniel had ever encountered, Barnes ultimately failed to get a victory for Silver in The Karate Kid Part III’s ending.

Their fight in the 1985 All-Valley Karate Tournament marked the last time Daniel and Barnes crossed paths, but just like the situations with Kreese, Johnny, Chozen, and now Silver, Cobra Kai presents an opportunity for the characters to meet once more. Whether or not he’ll appear hasn’t been confirmed, but certain details in the season 4 finale, comments from those involved with the show, and other facts shed light on whether or not Kanan’s Karate Kid character will play a role in Daniel, Johnny, and Chozen’s fight with Terry Silver in Cobra Kai season 5.
