Before 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story, it seemed like every Star Wars movie would be a box office success, but now Solo may need video games to bolster its reputation. The franchise is one of the biggest in the world and each one has been a huge commercial success. However, the release of Solo showed that even a franchise as large as Star Wars can struggle at the box office. Instead of making a billion dollars like its predecessor The Last Jedi, Solo went on to only gross $392 million worldwide. This caused Disney to drastically change its Star Wars plans, and any hope of a continuation of the story has so far been dashed.
A lot of factors led to the failure of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and it is very hard to pinpoint what exactly went wrong. It is most likely not due to the quality, as it was reviewed pretty well. The story followed a younger Han Solo before the events of A New Hope, and it was actually a pretty fun adventure in the galaxy far, far away. The story even ended with a hint at what was to come, but as of now it seems there are no plans to follow that sequel tease. If Disney does not continue the lingering plot threads of Solo in a film or TV show, then it should let the video game industry close out that chapter of the Star Wars story.
