Apple's next-generation Mac mini models will reportedly be powered by the new M2 and M2 Pro chips. Apple is expected to refresh its Mac mini line later this year with new models that are an upgrade over the current Mac mini that was launched back in 2020 with the original M1 chip. The company also continues to offer an Intel-powered Mac mini model that costs more than the M1-powered units.
The Mac mini is typically the most inexpensive way to enter Apple's desktop ecosystem. The iMac is the mid-range model, while the Mac Pro has always been the company's most powerful computer. However, at its hardware event this week, Apple also launched the M1 Ultra-powered Mac Studio that combines the form-factor of a Mac mini with the power and efficacy of the Mac Pro. In fact, Apple claims that it even beats PCs with the best chips from Intel and AMD.

A new report from 9to5Mac suggests that the next-generation Mac mini will be Apple's first desktop to ship with the new M2 and M2 Pro processors. The M2-powered device is said to be codenamed 'J473,' while the one with the M2 Pro is reportedly codenamed 'J474.' Work on both models is said to be nearing completion, and they are expected to be launched later this year. The report further claims that the company originally planned to bring Mac mini models powered by the M1 Pro and M1 Max chipsets, but most likely dropped that idea in favor of the Mac Studio.
