When it comes to the most valuable cards in Magic: The Gathering right now, chances are you'll have heard of the Black Lotus. It's gained a very well-earned reputation for being one of the most expensive cards in the collectibles market, routinely selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars, with two high profile examples being a Black Lotus that sold back in 2023 for $540,000, and a signed version that was bought by MTG celebrity enthusiast Post Malone for $800,000.
Those two Black Lotus cards used to be the most valuable of their kind, but the record seems to have been completely obliterated last month after Florida-based grading company Certified Guaranty (CGC) announced that a mint condition Black Lotus has sold for $3 million dollars. That not only makes this Black Lotus the most valuable of its kind, it also makes it the highest-priced Magic: The Gathering card ever sold.
Given that no Black Lotus had ever sold for over $1 million prior to this announcement, there are a lot of MTG fans wary about the sale. However, the buyer of the card recently spoke to Kotaku about the sale, claiming that it was a completely legitimate transaction and that he feels $3 million is "about right" in today's market. They also admit that they may have "overpaid a bit", but explain that they're not all that bothered as they're not buying the card to immediately flip it.
With this sale, the title of "most valuable MTG card" no longer belongs to the single print variant of The One Ring that was released as part of the Tales from Middle-Earth crossover set that launched last summer, which was bought by Post Malone for a whopping $2 million. Being the only version of that card in existence, it was previously thought that it would remain the most valuable card almost indefinitely, but this Black Lotus sale has smashed that record to pieces.
