If you've unlocked Altonian Understanding on the Cypher of the First Ones, you might have already played through the Jiro to Hero questline, started by a Maw-touched Jiro named Hanoa the Exile. This side story has a couple of interesting lore tidbits — one in particular relating to Sanctum of Domination, patch 9.1's raid.
This article contains spoilers for the 9.2 side storyline, Jiro to Hero. Familiar LocationAt one point, Hanoa tells us a little about the event that led to her corruption, describing black steel chains piercing the veil to latch onto a cypher archive — ripping it out of Zereth Mortis itself. Hanoa, who was in the archive at the time, escaped — but not before the Maw magic changed her. Ever since, Devourers have been terrorizing the land, and Hanoa wonders if the two incidents are related.
Hanoa the Exile says: I will tell you what happened. I was in the cypher archive. Then the attack came. Hanoa the Exile says: Black steel chains pierced the veil. Made of the same metal you found in the cave. Hanoa the Exile says: Chains latched onto the archive. Ripped it out. Magic struck me. I escaped. Hanoa the Exile says: I felt the touch of the Maw. It spread over me. I began to feel strange. Hanoa the Exile says: I could not sense the other jiro. The Circle was gone. I was alone. Severed. Hanoa the Exile says: I returned to the Circle. They sent me away. I do not blame them. The Maw taint must not spread. Hanoa the Exile says: Here. This was the cypher archive. Now it is a scar on the land. Hanoa the Exile says: Devourers consume the magic of the land. They are unstable.
