Your priority should instead focus on upgrades that affect combat, saving ones that do not until later.
The two main defensive parts of your ship, the Shields and the Hull, are important to keep it in tip-top shape. The deflector shield has one main part, and the best upgrade you can get for it is the S50C. Each upgrade and piece of the deflector shield only gives you a greater capacity, so this is not your biggest priority, but more health is always better.
