Nominations are now in for the 74th annual Emmy awards, which will be held September 12. A host has not yet been announced--Cedric the Entertainer hosted in 2021, and Jimmy Kimmel in 2020.
JB Smoove and Melissa Fumero presented the nominees Tuesday, with many of the shows earning several nominations across the major categories. Succession, for example, earned a nomination for Best Drama as well as acting nominations for Brian Cox, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, Sarah Snook, and J. Smith-Cameron. The show landed 25 nominations overall, the most for any show this year.
Ted Lasso snagged nominations for best Best Comedy and cast members Jason Sudekis, Juno Temple, and Hannah Waddingham each earned nominations. Sudekis' former Saturday Night Live castmate Bill Hader has earned a nomination for acting in Barry, and his show about a hitman turned actor is also up for a Best Drama Emmy.
However, the real breakaway story here is the South Korean crime thriller Squid Game, the most nominations ever for a foreign language show. For the embattled Netflix, which after a rough year of losing lots of subscribers and running into shareholder issues, this is likely a bit of overdue good news. In June, the streaming service greenlit Season 2 of Squid Game.
