Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead now has Oscar gold, kind of. The Netflix-exclusive horror-heist movie won the newly-created Fan Favorite award at Sunday's ceremony. This is the first of its kind with ordinary fans voting on Oscar contention.
How it worked was that fans were able to vote online from February 14 to March 3. Army of the Dead beat out box office leaders like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dune (which won six Oscars), Malignant, Cinderella, The Power of the Dog, Minamata, The Suicide Squad, Tick...Tick...Boom (which former Spider-Man Andrew Garfield received his second Oscar nomination for), and the animated hit Sing 2.
Army of the Dead was released on Netflix in 2021 and quickly became one of its most-viewed films ever, but garnered fairly mixed reviews. The film earned a few nominations in other awards circuits, including a Best Supporting Actress for Tig Notaro from the Hollywood Critics Association.
Snyder's fans also came out in droves for the Oscars' new Best Movie Moment award, which saw Zack Snyder's Justice League win for the scene where the Flash went back in time. Neither of these wins led to an actual award being presented.
Snyder's next film will also be a Netflix exclusive called Rebel Moon. The story is reportedly based on a Star Wars pitch the director made around the time Disney acquired Lucasfilm. Snyder will be co-writing the script with Shay Hatten (Army of the Dead, John Wick: Chapter 4) and Kurt Johnstad (300, Atomic Blonde).
