YouTube has launched a referral program that will let users earn up to a year’s worth of free service for landing new Premium subscribers. For the unaware, YouTube Premium offers perks like an ad-free video watching experience, the ability to download videos for offline viewing, access to YouTube Music Premium, and background playback.
Back in January this year, YouTube TV also started doling out benefits with its own referral program. Folks who helped rope in new a customer for YouTube’s live TV streaming offering would get $20 toward their bill credit, while the new customer was awarded a discount worth $10. The company is now looking to pull off something similar with YouTube Premium.

The official support page notes that the Youtube Premium Referral Program will let users get a month’s worth of YouTube Premium for every contact they turn into a paying customer. However, there’s a limit to the number of credits available. The company says one person can only get up to 12 free credits, which can be stacked together to enjoy the perks of free YouTube Premium for a full calendar year. Moreover, the person who signs up for the paid tier will get to enjoy YouTube Premium at a flat rate of just $0.99 per month, for a span of three months. The subsidized billing for new YouTube Premium subscribers differs on a regional basis. For example, new YouTube Premium subscribers onboarded using a referral link will have to pay only INR 10 (roughly $0.13) for the first three months in India. The only caveat is that the invite link must be used by the contact and turned into an active subscriber account by the end of May 2023.
