Winning Time Season 2 Is Happening: HBO Renews Los Angeles Lakers Show
The currently ongoing HBO series, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, has officially been renewed for season 2. The HBO scripted sports drama showcases the dramatic sky-rocketed rise of the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers team in the 1980s that continued to run its course for the entirety of the decade, while also dipping into some behind-the-scenes controversies along the way. The series highlights the franchise-changing era kicked off with the purchase of the Lakers by Jerry Buss, followed by the drafting of Earvin “Magic” Johnson in 1979, which helped the franchise nose-dive into one of the greatest sports dynasties the world has ever seen.
Although Winning Time is currently midway through its first season, HBO has officially renewed the sports drama for a second season, according to THR. Executive Vice President for HBO programming, Francesca Orsi, commented on the renewal announcement, which can be read below:
The series not only tells the riveting story of the Lakers’ rise, but is also a look back at a transformative era in basketball, celebrity and the city of Los Angeles. We can’t wait to see how this team will tell the next chapter of this dynasty.

The dynamic scripted series includes John C. Reilly, Quincy Isaiah, Jason Clarke, Adrien Brody, Jason Segal, Gaby Hoffmann, Brett Vullen, and many more in its insanely packed cast. The HBO sports drama is based off the Jeff Pearlman novel, Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s. The first season of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty currently airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO, with its season finale premiering on May 8.
