The Wi-Fi Alliance announced Wi-Fi Certified 7, a new wireless internet tech that will be useful in extended reality (XR), games, 3D training and more.
Wi-Fi Certified 7 will usher in a new era of connectivity with advanced features designed to supercharge Wi-Fi performance and bolster connectivity across a myriad of settings, the alliance said.
Offering high throughput, deterministic latency, and enhanced reliability for critical traffic, Wi-Fi Certified 7 is poised to transform various industries, enabling applications such as multi-user AR/VR/XR, immersive 3-D training, gaming, hybrid work, industrial Internet of Things and automotive, the alliance said.
The Wi-Fi 7 technology is projected to get swift adoption, with an estimated 231 million devices set to hit the market in 2024, escalating to 2.1 billion devices by 2028. Early adopters of Wi-Fi 7 will include smartphones, PCs, tablets, and access points (APs), with customer premises equipment (CPE) and AR/VR equipment gradually gaining momentum.
Key features of Wi-Fi Certified 7 include 320 MHz channels, multi-link operation (MLO), 4K QAM, 512 compressed block-ack, and enhanced spectrum efficiency, among others. These innovations aim to provide ultra-wide channels for multi-gigabit device speeds, increased throughput, and heightened efficiency in wireless communication.
A consortium of tech giants including Broadcom, CommScope, Intel, Maxlinear, MediaTek, and Qualcomm spearheaded the test bed for certification, representing the pioneering devices marked under Wi-Fi Certified 7.
