Jeff Bezos was unrecognizable in the 2016 sci-fi film Star Trek Beyond and his eight-second cameo proved to be even more challenging to notice due to the heavy prosthetics and makeup that he sported. Bezos, the founder and chief executive of Amazon, is currently the second wealthiest person in the world, according to Forbes. Star Trek Beyond is the thirteenth film in the Star Trek franchise and was created by award-winning director Justin Lin. The movie followed protagonists Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and Commander Spock (Zachary Quinto) who, alongside other crew of the Starship Enterprise, were dispatched on a rescue mission to an uncharted nebula.
It is not the first time Star Trek has honored certain celebrities by letting them be part of the highly successful franchise. The Star Trek franchise has had many cameos, from the likes of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who appeared in Star Trek: Voyager season 6, episode 15, «Tsunkatse,» Kirsten Dunst, who appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 7, episode 7, «Dark Page» when she was just 11 years old, and even theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who played himself in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 6, episode 26, «Descent.» Jeff Bezos’ cameo, despite being short, was key to the Star Trek Beyond storyline.

After years of imploring Paramount, director Justin Lin generously agreed to give Jeff Bezos the role of an alien Starfleet officer who was based at Yorktown starbase. Yorktown, which was attacked by Krall in 2263, was a massive Federation space station, and Bezos' role quickly became central to the plot.
