At Tesla's invite-only Cyber Rodeo event near Austin, Texas, Elon Musk announced a new vehicle that the company has planned for the future, Tesla Robotaxi. The concept has been explored in science fiction for decades and there are a few in testing currently. However, Tesla's version might be much more interesting, and potentially make for a more exciting ride.
A Tesla can be rented out from many car rental companies but they are often booked up well in advance. Hertz has ordered 100,000 vehicles to make it a bit easier to get a few days of hands-on time with a Tesla before making a purchase or simply when choosing the most efficient car in the fleet while traveling. Elon Musk has mentioned a plan for Tesla owners to participate in a future customer-based ride-sharing program that would make personal vehicles available to other drivers to create a secondary income and reduce the cost of ownership.

The Tesla ride-sharing idea that was mentioned in 2016 hasn't arrived yet and loaning out an expensive personal car might not appeal to many owners, even if it makes sense for climate change and the pocketbook. A dedicated vehicle made specifically to serve as an autonomous taxi will likely be a much more attractive option and that's exactly what Musk is proposing for the future. The Tesla Robotaxi will probably not look like a repurposed Tesla Model Y, which would be the quickest and easiest solution. Based on the limited information shared, it will more likely have a completely unique appearance. During the event, Musk described it as looking 'quite futuristic.'
