Denis Villeneuve’s Dune gets a VFX make-over inspired by the classic look of David Lynch’s 1984 version. Frank Herbert’s far-future sci-fi novel of warring houses vying for control of the spice planet Arrakis was published in 1965 and quickly achieved classic status.
Given Dune’s huge impact in the world of fiction it was only a matter of time before someone tried adapting its sprawling story into a film. Directors like Alejandro Jodorowski and Ridley Scott famously worked on making a Dune movie before the task finally fell to Lynch. Unfortunately the 1984 Dune confused general audiences and proved to be a box office flop. Dune was later adapted as a TV movie, then in 2021 Villeneuve released the first part of his planned Dune movie trilogy, using state-of-the-art CGI to help realize Herbert’s incredibly dense and detailed sci-fi worlds.

Obviously Villeneueve had a huge advantage over other filmmakers who tackled Dune, given the state of modern special effects vs. what others had at their disposal in prior years. Nevertheless there are still many fans of 1984’s Dune who prefer that film’s relatively quaint pre-digital effects over the incredibly slick and seamless effects featured in Villeneuve’s version. The team at Corridor Crew obviously still love the original Dune, and therefore set out to see what might happen if the worlds of Dune 2021 and Dune 1984 were combined by adding retro effects to Villeneuve’s film, and the results were highly nostalgic if not exactly an improvement.
