The cancelation of the Batgirl movie might make Superman’s return to the DCEU more likely. Warner Bros. Discovery recently announced that it had scrapped the release of the Batgirl movie, which was set to star Leslie Grace in the titular role and feature the return of Michael Keaton’s Bruce Wayne/Batman following an appearance in The Flash, as well as the villain Firefly, played by Brendan Fraser. Though Batgirl's cancelation is surprising, and certainly, a huge letdown for the cast, crew, and audience looking forward to the movie, its removal from the release schedule may signal a return for a major DC superhero: Superman.
Batgirl's shocking cancelation comes in the wake of the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger, which was finalized in April 2022. At the time, it was reported that the new head of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, was considering overhauling the way DC characters would be used in future film and television endeavors. Batgirl's cancelation, as well as the lack of major new DCEU announcements at SDCC this year, may indicate that this overhaul is currently in the making. Aside from Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming Black Adam film, Zachary Levi’s second outing in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and an accidental leak concerning Ben Affleck’s return in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, little is known about the future slate of the DCEU. Even The Flash’s prospects are still up in the air, considering Michael Keaton's role is now under question, as well as the various legal problems concerning Ezra Miller.
