For many in North America, the film Vampire Hunter D served as an on-ramp to the world of Japanese animation. Released in 1985, the film was based on a long-running series of novels, written by Hideyuki Kikuchi. To date, nearly 50 books have appeared in the series, and the character has become part of popular culture. Set 10,000 years in the future, Vampire Hunter D tells the story of the titular hero, as he travels through a post-apocalyptic Earth, one once ruled over by vampires calling themselves the Nobility. The Nobility’s rule has waned, but the world is still overrun by darkness. D is a dhampir, or a daywalker, similar to Marvel’s Blade, and much like Blade, he hunts other vampires. The character has been adapted to two anime films, radio dramas, video games, and manga. Now, writer Brandon Easton, artist Ryan Benjamin, and inker Richard Friend are teaming up to bring readers an all-new Vampire Hunter D graphic novel.
