A first look at a new ‘ensemble’ Marvel game will take place at the D23 expo in September, as well as news on the future of Lego Star Wars.
In our review of Spider-Man for the PC we lamented the fact that despite the success of the MCU there are still precious few big budget console superhero games. That is slowly changing though and there are currently four AAA titles on their way, with two more rumoured from EA.
Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine from Insomniac are still a way off but while it keeps getting delayed Midnight Suns will hopefully be out early next year. The fourth game though is a mystery and the only thing we know officially is that it features an ensemble cast and is by Amy Hennig.
Hennig is best known as the creator of Uncharted (and Soul Reaver) and after getting messed around by EA, while working on an unreleased Star Wars game, now has her own studio at Skydance Media, and is set to reveal her Marvel game at the D23 event on September 9.
The reveal is described as a ‘sneak peek’ so it’s probably not going to be much more than a teaser trailer, but at the moment the only thing we know for sure about the game is that it’s a ‘narrative driven, blockbuster action adventure’.
That’s about as vague a description as you could get but while most of Hennig’s games have been third person actioners she’s never done an ensemble game before, and it’s unclear whether that means multiplayer elements or not.
There’s a bazillion different superhero teams in the Marvel universe but the assumption that it’s the Fantastic Four is based on comments made during a Kevin Smith podcast, where it was revealed that co-host Mark Bernardin has been working on the game.
