On March 16, Twitch CEO and co-founder Emmett Shear publicly announced his resignation, which brought an end to over 16 years of his leadership. The news first arrived in an email to all Twitch staff, which Shear then posted on his social media pages, and explained why he decided to step away from the post.
Lately, Twitch has decided to address the recent deepfake controversy in light of the ongoing risks that content creators face from bad actors. As female content creators faced the risk of having their likenesses used for explicit content without their consent, Twitch announced that it will not tolerate such content on its site, and hosted a Creator Camp stream on March 14 to address the problem. However, Twitch itself will make an immediate change at the top, for the first time in a long time.

In a letter addressed to all Twitch staff, and later shared in a series of tweets, Emmett Shear announced that his retirement was due to the fact that he recently became a father for the first time. In short, Shear's decision to stay and focus on spending time with his family was the driving force behind his decision to step away from the company he founded in 2006 alongside some friends. In his letter, Shear looked back on how he and some friends founded «Justin.tv» in 2006, with the idea of it being the first «24/7 reality show» of its kind. That idea would eventually shift its focus to a platform where anyone can stream at any time and then changed to Twitch in 2012 before becoming an Amazon-owned subsidiary a few years later.
