With their original songs, resident boy band 4*Town captured not only the hearts of Mei and her friends, but also the eyes and ears of Turning Red’s viewers. Turning Red, which marks Domee Shi’s feature directorial debut, follows Meilin “Mei” Lee’s (Rosalie Chiang) coming of age and generational curse. As a teenager, Mei begins to navigate newer sides of herself while continuing her obsession with the world-famous boy band 4*Town.
Voiced by Jordan Fisher, Finneas O’Connell, Josh Levi, Topher Ngo, and Grayson Villanueva, 4*Town is instrumental in Mei’s transition into adolescence. It is through the boy band that she fosters a stronger relationship with her best friends Abby (Hyein Park), Miriam (Ava Morse), and Priya (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan). On the other hand, 4*Town unintentionally pulls Mei away from Ming’s (Sandra Oh) conservative beliefs, since the teenager knows her mother disapproves of them. The talent and charm of 4*Town then pave Mei’s path towards growing up, allowing her to make her own decisions and stand up for what she holds dear.
